Description:

The Series III was launched in 1971, and didn’t change a great deal from the Series IIA that preceded it. It is still the type of classic Land Rover that features strongly in the general public's perception of the Land Rover, and its shape was carried right through from the Series II to the most recent Defender, which only this year has ceased production after its long 67 year life span. Upgrades from the Series IIA included a full synchromesh gearbox, new dashboard with integral heater and instrument cluster and radiator grille.

This particular model is a Mid Grey short wheel base (88”) ‘Hard Top’ model from the early 80s, in need of a little bit of extra TLC. Everything is operational and it is running and driving, however it could do with some further time spent on it to get it up to scratch, including new tyres to replace the perished items, replacing the rear springs, giving it a good service and improving the brakes. The latter have apparently had many replacement parts including a master, slaves, shoes etc but they are still a bit ‘weak’ and sometimes drag a little – they may just need adjusting and bedding in properly. The 2.25 petrol starts very readily from cold with a touch of choke, and drives well so seems to be in relatively healthy order. The exhaust system sounds like it has a slight blow, although the rear section is not correct anyway so it may be prudent to fit a new system. All gears select as they should and the low range and four-wheel drive options all work correctly.

Underneath, the chassis is very solid but has had a fair few patches/welding jobs carried out over the years – have a look at the photos on our website to satisfy yourself with the condition. The bulkhead is also good and solid, with new footwells although the top corners seem like they have a bit of filler in. The door tops could really do with replacement, the left hand one has had some repairs in the past. The body work we would describe as having had a ‘amateur’ spray job, although is presentable enough for most uses!

Inside, the interior is in okay order, the dash top has the usual ‘crack’ in it and the wiper motor cover needs repair/recovering but it is all there. The seats are the later cloth-type with head rests, which are a lot more comfortable than the early style. The odometer reads 02744, however we are unable to verify whether this is correct.

We are selling this Landy as another ‘spares or repairs’ candidate for someone to carry out an easy rolling project… You could do the odd few bits to it to get it roadworthy, then use it as a Landy should be used, or use it as a donor for a restoration project, whatever you want to do with it. We just haven’t the time/capacity to carry out the work ourselves currently, so she is waiting for a new owner to give it the attention it requires.
